Parents play a pivotal role at Community School of Davidson. A vital partnership is created between the home and school with parents viewed as the child's first and most important teachers. We need and expect your help in educating our students. We welcome and encourage parents into our school to volunteer in a variety of ways. We conduct volunteer training sessions to ensure that all volunteers are equipped with the skills needed to be successful with our students. We offer a variety of parent workshops throughout the year that are open to the public and free of charge.
If you would love to volunteer but it's a challenge for you to be available during the day; there are many different ways you can contribute! Send us an e-mail at info@csdnc.org and we'll connect you with the right person!
Opportunities
Room Parent. Room Parent(s) act as the liaison between the classroom teachers and classroom parents. Typical duties of the room parent include coordinating volunteer schedules, sending out communications concerning classroom requests/needs, and working closely with the teachers assisting with needs that may arise in the class. You will be responsible for attending 4-5 meetings to coordinate scheduled events with the Room Parent Committee. You will be responsible for contacting the class and collecting monetary donations for teacher and staff gifts. You may need to back up the Auction Coordinator and Teacher Appreciation Coordinator as needed. Ideally, two people sharing these duties works best.
Classroom Garden Helper. Garden helpers are needed for Grades K through 3 to help maintain our classroom gardens and assist with student involvement. This requires just a few hours per month in the fall and spring. Helpers interested in art can assist with art projects that are tied into student curriculum and displayed in the gardens. The gardens are in different stages of development and a staff garden coordinator is available to assist garden helpers.
Classroom Earth Day Volunteer. We have 6 Earth Day activity days so that each grade (K-5) has their own Earth Day experience. We need 4 parent volunteers for Earth Day from 8:30-11:30. Our “Earth Week” typically falls around April 22nd, which is our national Earth Day. Responsibilities include: Set up/Clean up, re-setting activities after each rotation, and assisting teachers. All activities are teacher led. This is a fun and easy volunteer activity to be a part of and the students love it!
Davidson Walk and Rolls. This is a program sponsored by the Town of Davidson designed to promote exercise and healthy choices. Parent Volunteers will meet at a designated location prior to school and will lead groups of student walkers safely to CSD. This occurs only once or twice per month.
Fast ForWord Volunteer. The Fast ForWord program is a proven language intervention through software products that strengthens brain processing and literacy skills. These programs help increase reading proficiency and language skills in students of all ages. Volunteers are needed to monitor students while they complete the exercises on the computer. Volunteers will walk the student back to their classroom and get the next student on the schedule. The schedule runs on 30-minute blocks, so prompt start and end times are necessary for the students. Volunteers can sign up for any amount of time (i.e.: 30mins or 2 hour block of time, etc), however, times/days must be consistent on a weekly basis. The volunteers are needed each week for the times they choose.
Helping Hand K-5 Coordinator. Helping Hands was created by our CSD Community to assist families in need. This may include helping organize meals, carpools, childcare, etc. This person will coordinate the efforts of the classroom Helping Hands Representatives. They will share information between classroom reps where there is a family in need who has children in various classrooms. They will assist with setting a schedule for family assistance between classes. In addition, this person will be available to answer questions from the classroom reps.
Hospitality Volunteer. This committee is responsible for providing food once a month for our teachers’ staff meetings as well as providing teachers a soup luncheon in January. The committee has also been called on to provide snacks for the school garden cleanup day, teachers Christmas luncheon, the golf outing, and the staff retreat in May. It’s a good way for working parents to be involved.
Teacher/Staff Appreciation Coordinators. These parents coordinate the Teacher/Staff Appreciation events. Unlike in the past, we will be sharing small tokens of appreciation with our teachers/staff throughout the school year. These events/tokens will be simple in nature and will require minimal effort and planning. The Teacher/Staff Appreciation Committee will meet near the beginning of school year to discuss our plans.
Vision Screening Volunteers (Grades K, 1st, 3rd, and 5th only). Two parents are needed to help administer a vision screening test. Volunteers will need to attend a ½ day training session in the fall. You will need to be available for two days for the actual screening.
Yearbook Classroom Coordinator. Yearbook Coordinators are responsible for collecting, organizing, and uploading class photos to a central file folder on the school’s network. Within the first 4 to 6 weeks of the school year the yearbook team will meet with the coordinators to explain access to the network folders and will discuss the overall process and the necessary milestones throughout the year to meet the final yearbook deadline. Thereafter, the coordinators will meet with the teacher(s)/assistant(s) to show them the central file and explain the milestones throughout the year. Finally, the coordinators will work with the teachers and the yearbook team to determine which photos should be included in the yearbook so that each child and important events are appropriately represented in the final book.
Open House Parent Volunteers. Elementary and MS parents are needed to help with open houses for parents of potential new students. You need to arrive 30 minutes before the scheduled open house to register and give paperwork to parents and also help at the end of the open house session with tours of the school. There will be 6 morning sessions, 4 evening sessions and 1 afternoon session during October, November and January. Times and dates are listed on the website. Please help with as many sessions as you are able. The time commitment for each open house would be up to approx. 2 ½ hours. A schedule will be created so we can have volunteers organized in advance.
