Spanish

Our goal for each student is to create an inherent appreciation and love of foreign language and culture.  Students should reach a new level of comprehension and proficiency while having fun.  The Spanish lesson plans are designed to integrate into their current theme study, with topics and vocabulary that are relevant in their daily learning.  Using books, music, games, food, and acting skills, we make Spanish into a fiesta!

Kindergarten

In Kindergarten some of the basic building blocks are introduced, such as colors, numbers and shapes.  These topics are enhanced by the artist/author studies as well as the ocean life study in the kindergarten curriculum.

First Grade

First grade students will learn about Spanish speaking artists, discuss family relationships, enjoy an extensive new vocabulary of farm and zoo animals, and begin to express emotions in Spanish.  We will also introduce the Spanish alphabet and begin to read in a new language!

Second Grade

Second grade students will begin conversational Spanish, which will allow them to discuss weather, directions, transportation, greetings and other essential "travel" vocabulary.  As part of their famous American study, we will learn about famous Hispanic Americans.

Third Grade

In third grade, the conversational Spanish will continue with a concentration on written Spanish.  Students will read/translate text as they are challenged to communicate with classmates.  Third grade theme studies will include fresh produce at the ‘mercado’ and space travel in Spanish.

Fourth Grade

Fourth graders will begin to conjugate verbs into the present tense.  This is an important step toward effective communication, and very rewarding!  Study units include school supplies, mathematics in Spanish, around the town and careers (in preparation for BizTown).

Fifth Grade

In fifth grade, we continue verb conjugation with proper sentence structure as we study sea life for their trip to Barrier Island.  We also complete an intensive study of Mexico.  We discuss geography, history, traditions, sports, food and music.  Our unit ends with a fifth grade fiesta, complete with songs, a Mexican hat dance, and yes, a piñata!
