I was born in Charleston, West Virginia and have lived in the Charlotte area since I was 4 years old. After graduating from Independence High School, I went on to Appalachian State University where I received a BS in Music Industries. While at ASU, I studied clarinet with Doug Miller and piano with Alan Kindt. I continued my education at Winthrop University where I studied under Phil Thompson, Dave Franklin and Bill Malambri. While at Winthrop I received a Master of Arts in Teaching/Music. I began my teaching career at Carmel Middle School in 1990. In 1996 I transferred to Cabarrus Co. where I was the Band Director at Northwest Cabarrus Middle School and the Assistant Director of Bands at Northwest Cabarrus High School.
After my son Austin was born in 1997, I decided to finish out the school year and become a “stay at home” mom. 3 1/2 years later, Lindsay and Hannah were born…at the same time!!!! Well, Hannah was born thirty three minutes later! I really cherished the time I was with the kids while they were small. In 2004, my pastor asked to me to lead a children’s summer musical at our church. After three months of rehearsing and spending time with the children, preparing them for their performance, I realized that I still had a desire to teach kids music!
When the girls started kindergarten in 2006, I started a new chapter as the Band Director at Bradley Middle School in Huntersville. The students were wonderful! I had been there for about two years when I received an email from a colleague about the position at Community School of Davidson. I had heard so many wonderful things about the school that I had to check it out! When I visited the school to observe the daily activities, I was so impressed with the level of respect between teachers and students. It didn’t take me long to realize that it was a special place! I am so thankful to now call it home!
In my spare time, I enjoy watching my son perform on stage, shopping with my daughters, gardening and cooking. My husband Don, is a former Band Director. In fact, he is the most talented musician I know and I often use him as a resource!!! Austin is in the 7th grade. Hannah and Lindsay are in the 4th grade. All three are proud to be students here!
I am so grateful to be apart of such a fabulous staff and to have the opportunity to teach such terrific kids! I loved band growing up and I truly enjoy sharing my joy for music with my students!
